"Blessed be Walter Hooke"

  • 2 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • A sign once carried in an anti-war demonstration by the late Walter G. Hooke, who died at the age of 97 last week, is brought to the altar of St. Patrick's Church in Cambridge, N.Y., by his great-niece, Alexandra Goodwin, on Monday. "Walt reached out to the poor ... the dispossesed ... the underdogs. Those were Walt's people," said Father George Clements of Chicago, who helped celebrate the funeral mass. A former executive with UPS, Hooke was instrumental in integrating that company, once "a bastion of racism," Clements said. He befriended Cesar Chavez, a champion of migrant workers, and supported Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker movement. In later years, Hooke, who served in the U.S. Marines during the occupation of Nagasaki, Japan, fought on behalf of "atomic veterans" harmed by exposure to radiation, securing their rights to medical treatment. "I have never known anyone ... as passionate about social justice as Walter Hooke," said Clements.
