Will Keen plays the tenor saxophone Monday during a performance by the Southern Vermont College Jazz Band at Fillmore Pond. The band, directed by faculty member Eric Despard, was warmly received by residents, including Don Perkins. The music included compositions by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter.

About a dozen Village at Fillmore Pond staff members colored their hair purple Tuesday to fulfill a pledge made during the annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk earlier this year. The assisted living facility raised more than $13,000 for the cause, besting last year’s total by $1,000. November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness month and purple is the color adopted by organizations combating the disease.

James Hurd is celebrated Friday for 25 years of service to the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Hurd, 96, only recently gave up his driver's license and stepped down from his volunteer duties. "He is much older than some of the residents he was calling bingo numbers for and playing volleyball with," according to Jenna Prentiss, the activities director. The center's staff presented Hurd, who continues to live independently, with a microwave oven, which he will use to prepare his own meals.
