Avery Shepard, 5, climbs the 417 stairs leading to the top of the
Bennington Battle Monument with Jim Dulin, a member of the Friends
of the Monument, on Friday. The stairs, which are typically locked,
will be open to the public today, Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. An additional $1 admission charge benefits the non-profit
Friends group, which is being helped with the event by the Mount
Anthony cross country running program.

Manchester's 250th anniversary

Donald Otis is overcome with emotion Monday as he and his wife, Nancy Otis, are named grand marshals of Manchester’s 250th anniversary celebration during a ceremony at the Bennington County Courthouse. Donald Otis is a former headmaster of Burr and Burton Seminary; Nancy Otis co-authored a history of Manchester. Lyman Foss, dressed as a town crier, read the town charter. Members of Boy Scout Troop 332 joined in singing Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.”
