Community Visit

  • The Vermont Council on Rural Development began its Bennington Community Visit with a series of meetings Thursday. The topic of poverty drew one of the largest crowds. The program continues with a community pizza dinner from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Bennington Fire House. That will be followed by a meeting devoted to the town's self-image. Meetings focusing on education and economic development take place, respectively, at the Elks Lodge and Masonic Temple from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The queen-sized piece, which Holmes created with the help of the local quilting guild, is being raffled to benefit an anniversary celebration set for Aug. 19 and 20. Manchester's 250th anniversary

  • Donald Otis is overcome with emotion Monday as he and his wife, Nancy Otis, are named grand marshals of Manchester’s 250th anniversary celebration during a ceremony at the Bennington County Courthouse. Donald Otis is a former headmaster of Burr and Burton Seminary; Nancy Otis co-authored a history of Manchester. Lyman Foss, dressed as a town crier, read the town charter. Members of Boy Scout Troop 332 joined in singing Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.”
