Dean Catellier positions a boulder in the Batten Kill as part of a trout habitat restoration project Wednesday.The creation of "rock vortexes" slows the current, allowing fish to rest and catch insects, according to Chris Alexopoulos of the U.S. Forest Service. This is the fourth year local, state and federal agencies are cooperating on the project.

Restoring the Battenkill

Scott Wixsom of the Green Mountain National Forest directs a joint effort to restore the Battenkill's trout habitat Thursday in Arlington. The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and Batten Kill Watershed Alliance are partners in the project. Heavy equipment operators are installing cover and shelter structures and feeding stations along a half-mile stretch of the river.
