Purple Heart

  • Paul Wilhelm, 63, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, holds a Purple Heart that he earned after a firefight in An Hoa, South Vietnam, in 1969. The original medal was lost at some point and the home’s staff successfully petitioned for a new one to be presented recently to the former lance corporal. “It completes my life as it is right now,” Wilhelm, a native of Troy, N.Y., said Tuesday.
