Members of the Bennington Reds baseball team distribute flags to residents of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. The Reds will playing in Virginia on Independence Day, and so they made an early visit to the vets. "Thank you for your service," they said to each recipient of a flag.

Elks collect deer hides

Terri Burdick shows some of the 25 deer hides collected by Elks Lodge No. 178 in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. The hides will be turned into fingerless gloves for veterans in wheelchairs, among other things. Hunters may donate hides to the program by leaving them in barrels on the porch of the Elks Lodge at 21 Church St.

Capitol Christmas Tree Kick Off Ceremony

The Capitol Christmas Tree stopped at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington on its way to Washington, D.C. Dignitaries honored the veterans for their military service. A convoy is carrying trees to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and other veterans hospitals. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie, Smokey the Bear and Olympic gold medalist Hannah Teter were among those at the event.
